Why a Podcast SEO Audit Is Worth It (Even If You Think Your Show Is “Fine”)
Here’s a quick test I want you to try before you read another word of this post. Open your podcast app. Type in your show’s main topic — not your show name, the topic — the thing your ideal listener would actually search for. Now look at the results. Is your show at the top of the search results? If not, you just found your discoverability problem.
Most podcasters have no idea this gap exists. They assume that if their show is good, people will find it. But podcast apps work like search engines, and search engines reward shows that are optimized to be found, not just shows that offer good content.
That one search is the difference between showing up in front of listeners who are already looking for what you talk about and not. And that audience is bigger than most people realize: roughly 40% of all podcast searches come from people actively looking for a new show to listen to. If you’re not ranking within podcast players, you’re missing that exact moment when someone is ready to hit “listen” or “follow.”
The Problem Isn’t Your Content
I’ve audited shows with incredible content, smart hosts, and loyal audiences that were still invisible to new listeners because nobody had ever gotten laser clear on 1) what the show should rank for, and 2) where those keywords needed to live.
Podcast SEO is about being intentional with two things:
- The exact words your ideal listener is typing into search
- The exact places those words need to show up so the app can match you to that search
Most shows are guessing at both.
What a Podcast SEO Audit Actually Does
When I audit a show, I’m not just skimming your titles and calling it a day. I’m going deep into how your show is currently being found (or not found), and building a discoverability strategy for it. That includes:
- Identifying the keywords your show should be ranking for based on what your ideal listener is actually searching for
- Evaluating your current keyword placement across your show and episode metadata
- Flagging when a show is too niche to build real search visibility, and where broadening slightly could actually grow the audience that finds your offer
That last one surprises people.
I’ve had podcasters come to me convinced their niche was too broad, when the real issue was the opposite — they’ve gone so narrow that there wasn’t enough search volume to be found at all.
Again, an audit shows you which problem you actually have, so you’re not optimizing for the wrong thing.
The Results Speak for Themselves
I’ve spent the last five years studying podcast SEO, and I built my strategy around what actually moves rankings.
Here’s what that looked like for podcasters I’ve worked with:
- One show went from not appearing at all in search to ranking #4 for their target keyword in under 24 hours
- One show started ranking #1 for half a dozen keywords within a week
- Another saw a 155% increase in downloads after implementing their audit recommendations
- A podcaster who thought their content was underperforming learned their issue was being too niche, so they adjusted their content strategy to build broader awareness.
Most clients see a 2-3x increase in podcast audience growth within 30-60 days. These are the kinds of shifts that happen almost immediately once your keywords and placement are locked in.
What to Expect From a Podcast SEO Audit
When you book an audit with me, here’s exactly what you get:
A full, detailed report of my analysis within 48 hours — a breakdown of where your show currently stands, the keywords you should be targeting, and specifically where those keywords need to go.
A live session with me — this is where we go through the findings together, you ask me anything, and we nail down your strategy, so you leave knowing exactly what to do next.
I take a good look at your show and offer a real plan to fix what’s keeping it invisible.
While you can absolutely try to figure this out yourself, here’s what that usually costs you versus what an audit offers.
| DIY | Podcast SEO audit |
|---|---|
| Guessing at keywords based on gut feel | Keywords backed by actual search data |
| Trial and error over weeks or months | Full report in 48 hours |
| No way to know if you’re too niche or too broad | An outside, expert read on your positioning |
| Generic SEO advice built for blogs, not podcast apps | Strategy built specifically for how podcast apps rank shows |
Your Show Could Be Ranking By This Weekend
Podcast SEO isn’t a six-month project.
It’s a handful of specific, strategic changes, and once they’re in place, results can show up almost overnight, as they did for the podcaster who jumped from unranked to #4 in under 24 hours.
You work so hard on your show. With the right SEO strategy, your people will find you.
If you’ve never checked whether your show ranks for its own topic, do that search right now. And if you don’t like what you see, let’s fix it.
